Driving Instructor Training Course:

At SMS Driving School, we specialise in helping future instructors succeed by providing comprehensive training for all three parts of the ADI qualification process. From in-depth preparation for the Part 1 theory and hazard perception test, to tailored one-to-one coaching to master the Part 2 advanced driving test, and expert guidance on lesson planning and teaching techniques for the Part 3 instructional ability test, we cover every stage with proven methods. Our programme not only equips you with the skills to pass the exams, but also supports you in building a sustainable career as a driving instructor, with the potential to generate an income of £3,000+ per month once qualified and registered.

ADI Part 1:

Part 1 of the ADI driving test is the theory test, designed to assess your knowledge of road safety, driving techniques, instructional ability, and the Highway Code. It is made up of 100 multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception section with 14 video clips. To pass, you must score at least 85 out of 100 in the multiple-choice section (with a minimum score in each subject area), and 57 out of 75 in the hazard perception. Passing Part 1 proves you have the solid knowledge base needed to progress to the next stage of becoming a driving instructor.

Adi Part 2:

Part 2 of the ADI driving test is the driving ability test, which ensures you can drive to a very high standard expected of an instructor. The test usually lasts around one hour and is divided into several sections:

Eyesight Check: You’ll be asked to read a car number plate from 26.5 metres. Failing this means the test will not continue.

‘Show Me, Tell Me’ Vehicle Safety Questions. You’ll answer 5 questions about vehicle safety and basic maintenance. Example: “Tell me how you’d check the brakes are working before a journey.” These test your knowledge of keeping a car safe and roadworthy.

General Driving Ability: You’ll drive in a variety of road and traffic conditions. The examiner looks at how well you: Use mirrors and signals Show awareness and anticipation of hazards. Control speed and positioning, Apply safe and professional driving techniques.

Reversing Manoeuvres (you’ll be asked to do one of these): Parallel park at the side of the road. Park in a bay (driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out) Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for 2 car lengths, then rejoin traffic.

Independent Driving: Around 20 minutes of driving either following sat-nav directions or road signs. This checks how well you can make safe decisions without step-by-step guidance. Pass Criteria: No more than 6 driving faults (minor mistakes).

No serious or dangerous faults allowed.

Passing Part 2 shows you can drive to a professional, safe, and reliable standard — the foundation for teaching others.

Adi Part 3:

What the test is about:

part 3 of the adi test is the instructional ability test, which assesses how well you can deliver a real driving lesson to a learner. unlike the earlier stages that focus on your knowledge and driving skills, this test is designed to evaluate your ability to teach. an examiner from the dvsa will sit in the back of the car while you conduct a normal driving lesson with a pupil of your choice. throughout the session, the examiner observes how you plan, structure, and deliver the lesson to ensure the pupil is learning effectively and safely. the purpose is to demonstrate that you can create a positive learning environment and adapt your teaching to suit the pupil’s needs.

What you are marked on:

during the test, the examiner marks you against three main competencies: lesson planning, risk management, and teaching and learning strategies. lesson planning looks at how well you prepare a session based on the pupil’s level of ability and goals. risk management is about how effectively you keep the lesson safe, such as by giving clear instructions, intervening when necessary, and ensuring the pupil understands the importance of safety. teaching and learning strategies cover how you communicate, the feedback you give, and the techniques you use to help the pupil progress. the examiner is looking for evidence that you can adjust your teaching methods depending on the learner’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style.

The test results:

the part 3 test is scored out of 51 points. to pass, you must achieve at least 31 points, which demonstrates an acceptable level of instructional ability. scores between 43 and 51 are considered a high pass and show an excellent standard of teaching. if you score below 31, it is a fail, and you will need to retake the test. the grading system is designed not only to determine whether you are fit to join the adi register but also to highlight how effective you are as a teacher.

Passing part 3 is the final step in the process, and once successful, you can apply to become a fully qualified and registered driving instructor.
